This 1977 image depicts a recuperating young man seated on his bed in the male ward of the Segbwema, Sierra Leone clinic.

The most common complication of Lassa fever is deafness, which occurs in about 1/3 of cases, and can be permanent. As far as is known, severity of the disease does not affect this complication: deafness may develop in mild as well as in severe cases.
