This photo shows a virologist Frederick A. Murphy, D.V.M., Ph.D., as he was entering a Biosafety Level-4 (BSL-4) laboratory in order to examine specimens collected during a 1975 Marburg outbreak.

This facility was used to determine the cause of numerous disease outbreaks throughout the world. It was here, for example, in 1969 that Lassa specimens from Nigeria, and in 1975 Marburg specimens from South Africa, were examined by CDC officials.
