Picture of Bifurcated Smallpox Vaccination Needle

Image number: 0004-0703-0820-2104
Description: This scan of an electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the roughened surface at the tip of a “bifurcated” smallpox vaccination needle. Magnified 41x, this SEM reveals what is unseen with the naked eye at the tip of this bifurcated needle. The needle is used to administer smallpox vaccine by abrading the skin at the vaccination site, thereby, introducing the vaccina virus into the wound. This image was created in 1999 and provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Janice Carr.
