Picture of the Prongs of a Bifurcated Smallpox Vaccination Needle

Image number: 0004-0703-0820-2107
Description: At a magnification of 747x, this SEM reveals the roughened surface at the tip of one of the prongs of a “bifurcated” smallpox vaccination needle. Unseen with the naked eye, a highly magnified view of the tip of a bifurcated needle prong reveals its pitted texture. This needle is used to administer smallpox vaccine by abrading the skin at the vaccination site, thereby, introducing the vaccina virus into the wound. This image was created in 1999 and provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Janice Carr.
