Picture of a Officer Checking the Ration Card of a Nigerian Villager

Image number: 0004-0703-1422-2624
Description: This late 1960’s photo shows Karl Western, a CDC EIS officer, checking the ration card of a Nigerian villager who will get a helping of dry milk powder or corn soya mix—both high in protein. The CDC was asked in 1967 to assist the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in disease control and death prevention during the Nigerian-Biafran war. At one point during the war, there were nearly 500,000 cases of Kwashiorkor, a protein malnutrition, found in children in the relief camps and local villages. The children in these areas were highly susceptible to infectious diseases of all sorts, with high deaths resulting. This image was provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
