Stock photo of modern buildings at Salford Quays, Greater Manchester

Image number: 0018-0709-1302-1551
Description: Stock photo of modern buildings at Salford Quays, the terminal basin of the Manchester Ship Canal. The shapes and colours of the buildings compliment each other, especially the trough-shaped structure, which stands outside the Lowry Art Gallery. The ship canal was dug, from the mouth of the Mersey, near Liverpool, by "navvies" with picks and shovels, to allow ocean-going ships to reach the centre of Manchester. "Navvies were so-called because they dug the "navigation". Photographed 22 June 2005
