Stock Photo Description:
Corn on the cob grows anywhere, it`s a hardy plant that grows taller than a man. Some time after sowing the seed and the plant gaining some height, it puts up a shoot in the centre that looks rather like corn seeds and you could be excused for thinking that it`s going to go to seed, infact that shoot does go to seed and the in-experienced grower might be excused for thinking that all is lost and something must have gone wrong. Do not pull the plants up, they are not finished yet. Gradually you`ll notice some swellings down the main stem where the large leaves are situated and then a hairy looking top appears on these swellings as the swellings turn into small cobs. That is the process, the cobs grow out from the stem and not on the top of the stem as you can see in the photo. When the hairy growth turns brown and starts to die then the corn on the cob should be ready to pick.
