Stock Photo Description:
The stone castle was built by William the Conquerer in the late 11th century, on the site of an earlier wooden fort. It was occupied by Royalists in the Civil War but captured by the Parliamentary forces in 1646. They systematically destroyed it. The photo shows part of the ruins, which cover a large part of the hill on which it stood. Photographed 14 June 2004.
