A wild biennial plant found on wasteland, hedgerows, copse etc. It has purplish flowers. The flower head has an involucre of from eight to twelve slender spiny bracts curving upwards. The lower stem leaves form a cup in which rain and dew collect, drowning insects, the remains of which are then absorbed by the plant for its partial sustenance.
