Stock Photo Description:
Inveraray Jail is located in Inveraray Scotland. The old jail was completed in 1820 before prison reform was introduced and thus had very poor facilities where the prisoners just sat in the cells all day. In 1948 a new jail was built on the same site that was a much more up to date building that had heating, washing facilities and single person cells. The prisoners were given work to do during the day and had adequate outside space for fresh air and exercise. Within the grounds between 1816 and 1820 a court was built as the Circuit court , Sherrifs court and Burgh court. In tis image you see a machine that was used by the inmates as a form of punishment, They had to turn the handle continuously while the jailer applied more drag to the wheel.
