Stock Photo Description:
The 39 mile long, broad beam canal was dug by Francis Egerton, third Duke of Bridgewater and opened in 1761 to carry passengers and coal and iron ore from the Duke’s mines into industrial Manchester. It was the first ever canal which did not follow an existing waterway. The orange color of the water is staining by iron ore from the mines, which still persists, even though the mines have been closed. The Packet House was where passengers travelling to Manchester would buy their tickets.
