1989 picture of a building, which was destroyed after Hurricane Hugo swept through South Carolina on September 21, 1989.Late in the evening on September 21, 1989, the eye of Hurricane Hugo struck the coast of South Carolina north of Charleston. Winds of 135 mph, a tidal surge of 12-17 feet and heavy rains killed dozens of people, and caused 7 billion dollars in damage. CDC personnel were deployed to assist communicable disease and safety-related issues. This image was provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
