Picture of collected mosquitoes that have been thawed after being kept on dry ice, they are being emptied from a mosquito collection bag.

Mosquitos are attracted to sources of carbon dioxide, which is the gaseous form of dry ice, hence, it is used to attract mosquitos to the trap, then to anesthetize the captive insects, and finally, to freeze the vectors during shipping to the laboratory.
