During the 1975 Rhodesian (now Zimbabwean) Marburg fever outbreak, this staff member of the Infectious Disease Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa demonstrated the gowning procedure in the isolation ward. (Slide 1 of 6; PHIL ID #’s 6600 - 6605)In order to prevent the Marburg virus pathogen from spreading to other hospital staff members who were involved in the treatment of afflicted patients, precautions had to be taken. This hospital staff member was demonstrating how protective clothing is donned prior to entering areas in close proximity to patients able to transmit pathogenic contagion, which in this case were the Marburg virions.
