Stock Photo of the Rochdale Canal at Hebden Bridge

Image number: 0018-0709-1719-2644
Description: The Rochdale canal, 32 miles long, was built by immigrant navvies between 1799 and 1804, to carry coal and other goods between Manchester and Sowerby Bridge, it required 92 locks to lift it to 600 feet above sea level. In its heyday, it carried three quarters of a million tons of goods per year. Lack of maintenance and the growing useage of road traffic finished its commercial life in the 1940s but it was re-opened, for leisure use, along its whole length, in 2003. Many of the mills , warehouses and factories which lined its banks have been converted into specialist workshops or luxury apartment buildings. Many of the navvies, so-called because they dug the "navigation", came from Ireland. There are parks, gardens and marinas along the length of the canal. Photographed 11 July 2003.
