Stock Photo of a Whale-Tail Bench Seat at Whitehaven, Cumbria

Stock Photo of a Whale-Tail Bench Seat at Whitehaven, Cumbria

Stock Photo Description: Whitehaven was once second only to London as a major port in England. It exported mainly iron, steel and coal and imported tobacco from Virginia and rum and sugar cane from the West Indies. It is now designated as one of only 50 "Gem" towns in England. It was the site of the only foreign invasion of mainland England since 1066. John Paul Jones, the Commander of the American Continental Navy, landed, with the ship Ranger, during the American War of Independance, in 1778, with the intention of burning all the shipping in the harbour. His men, however, became drunk on rum and beer so the attack was abandoned. The photo shows a whale-tail public bench seat commemorating the opening Whitehaven shipyard in 1782. Photographed October 2006
