This is the Osborne 1, a “laptop” computer first used at the CDC in 1981 and was considered the “first true portable computer.”Though the screen could only display 52 characters per horizontal line, one could scroll horizontally in order to view up to 128 characters. Though the Osborne 1 was considered highly portable, it weighed an amazing 24.5 pounds.This image was created in 2004 and provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/James Gathany.
