This scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the roughened surface at the tip of one of the prongs of a “bifurcated” smallpox vaccination needle.

Magnified 187x, this SEM reveals the surface texture at the tip of this bifurcated needle prong. The needle is used to administer smallpox vaccine by abrading the skin at the vaccination site, thereby, introducing the vaccina virus into the wound.
